What Did We Build?

October 31, 2024
your words flow over me
trying to find a weakness
phosphorescent, sea-hued turns of phrase
some alien sea creature struggling in my net

what did we build here? in our mold-crusted halls
friends to the ghosts and the spirits
and not my neighbor

when I have had my fill of this life
and these empty halls fill with ancient memory
half-remembered truth, a misremembered conflict
will they sit and collect dust?

what did we build here? a life from scratch?
give yourself some credit
that time spent in the dark
made you radiant, unlike any other
beautifully scarred
